June 1959

Under a warm June sky, sunlight poured through the tall windows of Rogers City High School as the Class of 1959 gathered with proud families and cheering friends to mark a milestone years in the making: graduation day. Ninety-seven young men and women, dressed in black caps and gowns and each wearing a miniature red rose—their class flower—pinned proudly to their chest, prepared to step from the familiar halls of high school into the wide-open promise of adulthood.

The ceremony began on a note of tradition and pride, as the Rogers City High School Band filled the auditorium with the stirring strains of the school's alma mater. Voices swelled, hearts lifted, and for a moment, the entire community stood united in celebration of everything these students had accomplished together.

Then came the words that would carry the graduates forward. Class President Mark Heller addressed his fellow classmates with reflections on their shared journey. Salutatorian Fredrick Wozniak and Valedictorian Ann Heron, the top scholars of their class, offered words of wisdom earned through years of dedication and hard work. And the ceremony's keynote, delivered by Dr. Donald Kilbourn, president of personnel at Central Michigan University, invited the graduates to consider the powerful metaphor at the heart of his address: "The House We Build." It was a fitting theme for young people standing at the threshold of their futures, ready to lay the foundation for the lives they would create.

Superintendent of Schools Harry Grambau and Principal Herman Haneckow both took the stage to honor the graduates, acknowledging not just academic achievement, but the resilience and character this particular class had shown. For theirs was a graduation touched by both joy and sorrow. In a moving tribute, the ceremony paused to remember three classmates who never got the chance to walk across that stage: William Richards and Jacquelynn Studier, whose absences were felt deeply throughout their high school years, and Mary Lou Centala, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident just days before graduation. Their memory was carried forward that day, woven into the fabric of a class that would never forget them.

As the formal ceremony drew to a close, laughter and lighthearted chatter filled the room once more. Clusters of classmates could be found trading pens and well-wishes, signing each other's freshly printed copies of Perannos, the 1959 Rogers City High School yearbook; a labor of love painstakingly assembled over the course of the year by a dedicated staff under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Ann Heron and sponsor George Schneider. Page by page, that yearbook would preserve the memories, milestones, and mischief of a class now stepping boldly into the future.

Just days after commencement, 16-year-old junior Kaye Kile, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Leland Kile, boarded a journey that would take her far from the shores of Lake Huron. As Rogers City's third American Field Service Foreign Exchange Student, Kaye set off for Norway, ready to spend her summer immersed in a new culture, forging friendships across an ocean, and representing her hometown on an international stage. Her adventure stood as a testament to the spirit of curiosity and courage that Rogers City continued to instill in its young people.

Back home, the town itself was embracing a season of new beginnings. Karsten's Dairy threw open its doors to the community, inviting citizens to celebrate the grand opening of its brand-new, modern dairy plant on Third Street. It was a proud moment for owner Lewis Karsten and his devoted team—Alfred Haneckow, William Vandenbergh, William Ohlrich, Norman Brege, Wallace Dagner, and Larry Ellenberger. Alongside the dairy's beloved glass-bottled milk, customers could now find convenient cardboard cartons of both white and chocolate milk lining the shelves. And in an exciting new addition, a dairy bar was being built onto the front of the building, promising rich ice cream sundaes, fizzy sodas, and creamy malts destined to become a favorite gathering spot for families and friends of all ages.

And as the month rolled on, the crack of bats and cheers from the ball field signaled that another beloved tradition was underway: opening day of the Rogers City Little League. The festivities kicked off with a spirited parade, led by Little League Queen Jo Lynn Jarboe and her radiant court—Susan Geyer, Candace Parsons, Sarah Schalk, Cathryn Urlaub, and Sandra Jeane Dehring—waving to onlookers as they made their way through town. Behind them marched the season's ten teams, each bursting with hometown pride: the Cubs, Giants, Indians, Tigers, Dodgers, Sox, Cardinals, Braves, Pirates, and Yankees. The excitement culminated in the year's very first game, a showdown between the Pirates and the Yankees, kicked off in style when Little League President William Ransom threw out the ceremonial first pitch to City Manager Charles McKee.
