As the school bell chimed melodiously at precisely 8:20 a.m., a wave of local students was observed eagerly entering their classrooms, marking the beginning of a new academic year on the first day of school. This annual event, filled with excitement and anticipation, is a significant milestone for both students and educators alike. Despite the ongoing challenges posed by widespread staff shortages affecting educational institutions across the country, the schools in the Rogers City area have continued to demonstrate an impressive ability to attract and retain top talent, ensuring that students receive quality education and support.

For the 1946-47 academic year, the high school boasts a dedicated and diverse group of teachers, each bringing unique skills and experiences to the classroom. The esteemed faculty includes Marian Bechtelheimer, Walter Breiden, June Frederick, Kathryn Goodin, Harry Grambau, Ruth Hamilton, Marjorie Hansen, Milton Hoffer, Elsie Hornbacher, Martha Klinsmann, James Liuzzo, Helen Paradise, Lucile Provost, James Quinn, Genevieve Rains, Harry Randall, and Joseph Werda. Each of these educators plays a crucial role in shaping the minds of the students, fostering a nurturing environment for learning and growth.

In the elementary schools, the teaching staff is equally impressive, comprising Olive Akkala, Dora Brady, Nina Ferdelman, Luella Grambau, Betty Grigg, Grace Meyer, Clara Olsen, Dorothy Poch, Marie Schmidt, Marie Sellke, Jean Sells Vallee, and James Liuzzo. These dedicated teachers work tirelessly to instill foundational knowledge and a love for learning in their young students, setting the stage for future academic success.

Additionally, the parochial schools of St. John's and St. Ignatius have also opened their doors to welcome students back for another year of education. St. John's staff, which includes Maxine Geisert, Clarence Hutfilz, and Herbert Rupprecht, is committed to providing a faith-based education that emphasizes moral values alongside academic achievement. Meanwhile, St. Ignatius is staffed by a devoted group of Sisters: Sister Albin, Sister Charlita, Sister Cyprian, Sister Celestine, Sister Doloretta, Sister Bernadekkem, and Sister Edward, who are dedicated to nurturing both the spiritual and intellectual growth of their students.


In a spirited display of democracy, class officer elections were held at the high school, allowing students to have a voice in their leadership. This year’s senior class representatives include Jerold Geyer as president, Duane McLennan as vice-president, Fay Friedrich as secretary, Blanche Pilarski as treasurer, and Milton Hoffer serving as the class sponsor. These elected students are expected to take on their responsibilities with enthusiasm and dedication, contributing to the vibrant school community.


The excitement of the new school year is further complemented by the commencement of the varsity football season, which kicked off with a thrilling 12-6 victory over the Canadian Soo at home. This match showcased the talents of standout players such as FB Gerald Green and HB Marvin Opland, who each scored touchdowns, energizing the crowd and boosting team morale. Nearly 40 boys tried out for the football team this year, reflecting a strong interest in athletics among the students. The team is led by the experienced Coach Jim Quinn, alongside first-year Assistant Coach Harry Randall, both of whom are committed to developing the players' skills and teamwork.

In the realm of infrastructure, the highway stretch connecting Rogers City to the Swan River bridge on US-23 is currently undergoing important repairs. However, progress has been hindered due to a shortage of steel necessary for reinforcement. Despite these challenges, nearly three miles of new concrete have already been laid, significantly improving the quality of the ride for those traveling to Grand Lake and Alpena. The stone required for this project has been generously supplied by the Michigan Limestone & Chemical Company, highlighting the collaboration between local businesses and public works.

As students settle into their routines after the first week of school, many find that nothing recharges their mental energy quite like enjoying a film at the Rogers Theater. Currently showing is "The Bells of St. Mary's," a likely Christmas classic featuring the beloved performances of Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman. This film, with its heartwarming story, offers a perfect escape for students and families alike, providing a delightful way to unwind.

In business developments, a new building has been constructed on the corner of Fourth and Erie Streets, designed to accommodate three existing businesses owned by local entrepreneurs Elmer Radka, William Swallow, and Edward Zehner. This new establishment includes Radka's Barbershop, the Little Giant Lunch Room, and Hudson Motor Sales & Service, all of which contribute to the vibrant local economy and provide essential services to the community.

In the political arena, Michigan Republican candidate for Governor Kim Sigler made a notable visit to town, where he engaged with an enthusiastic crowd of approximately 300 supporters in the high school gymnasium. His visit included a tour of the Calcite plant, an important local industry, followed by a meal at the Brooks Hotel. Sigler's campaign efforts proved successful, as he went on to win the election, serving as the 40th governor of Michigan from 1947 to 1949.
