September 1945

It's back-to-school season in Rogers City as children savor the final days of their summer vacation during the Labor Day holiday. This time of year holds a particular significance, as fathers, who have been away serving in the military during World War II, begin to return home to their families. The joyous reunions are filled with a mix of excitement and emotion, as these fathers are eager to spend precious quality time outdoors with their sons and daughters, as well as their wives, despite the visible and invisible scars left by the war. The atmosphere is charged with a sense of hope and renewal, as families come together to celebrate the simple pleasures of life after a long and arduous separation.

In addition to the academic pursuits, the Rogers City High School Huron varsity football team kicked off their season with an electrifying 34-0 victory against Pellston at home on September 22nd. Halfback Dick Flewelling showcased his athletic prowess by scoring three touchdowns, igniting the enthusiasm of fans and players alike. However, the excitement was tempered just a week later when the team faced a tough opponent in the Canadian Soo and experienced a narrow 7-0 loss. This season, the Hurons are competing in the Big Eight Conference, which has been strategically divided into northern and southern halves to minimize travel distances for the teams, making it easier for players and fans to attend games.

In the community, significant changes are also taking place. After being honorably discharged from the Merchant Marines, Louie LeVeck seized the opportunity to open Louie's Steak House at the former site of the Star Theater on East Michigan Avenue. This new establishment quickly became a local favorite, managed by Louie and his wife, Virgilene, who created a welcoming atmosphere for patrons. The restaurant staff included friendly waitresses like Theresa LeVeck, Louie's daughter, and Violet Freel, who ensured that guests received excellent service and delicious meals.
