September 1944

This past weekend marked the final celebration of Labor Day, a time when families came together to enjoy the last remnants of summer before the onset of the school year. The air was filled with laughter and the enticing aroma of grilled meats as families indulged in delightful cookouts, relishing the flavors of homemade dishes and sharing stories around the fire. Children splashed joyfully in the local swimming spots while the evenings were enchanting, illuminated by the soft glow of fireflies dancing in the twilight. Campfires crackled as ghost stories were shared, a tradition that never fails to spark both fear and excitement among the younger ones.

As the summer days came to a close, the school year loomed ahead, with classes set to commence on Tuesday, September 5th. The high school bell will ring at 8:20 a.m., while the elementary school will begin its day at 9:00 a.m. It's important to remember that you have until the upcoming Monday to purchase your books and supplies at the school bookstore, so make sure to take advantage of the used copies available, as they are significantly more affordable. This year's roster of teachers is quite impressive, reflecting a dedicated staff eager to guide the students through their educational journey.

The administration this year includes Principal Harry Grambau, who brings fresh ideas and enthusiasm, alongside Superintendent Howard Gilpin and School Physician Dr. Samuel Rutledge, both of whom are committed to the well-being and success of the students. The transportation for our young scholars will be managed by dedicated bus drivers Fred McCutcheon, August Luedtke, and Carl Torno, ensuring safe travels to and from school. This year, the enrollment in our public schools has reached a noteworthy total of 719 pupils, a testament to the community's commitment to education.

In the realm of sport, the Rogers City Huron football team has kicked off their season under the guidance of the beloved Coach James Quinn. The excitement surrounding this season is palpable, as the team prepares to face off against larger Class B and Class C schools, including formidable opponents like Cheboygan, Alpena, Cadillac, Sault Ste. Marie, Manistee, Petoskey, and Traverse City. Due to directives from the Department of Defense, the school is unable to utilize school buses for away games this year, which means that parents will be stepping in to drive their children to the games. Thankfully, the school has promised to reimburse parents for both gasoline and mileage, a thoughtful gesture that acknowledges the families' support. The Hurons have already made a strong impression, winning their first game against Cheboygan with a score of 25-7, largely thanks to Leonard Kowalski's outstanding performance, scoring two touchdowns.

For those looking for entertainment, the Rogers Theater is currently screening the delightful film "Going My Way," featuring the charming performances of Bing Crosby and Rise Stevens. The showtimes are set for 7:15 p.m., with a special Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m., providing an excellent opportunity for families to enjoy a night out together. It's a lovely way to unwind and share in the joy of cinema, a perfect end to the summer and a great way to transition into the fall season.
