November 1953

This month has proven to be unusually warm, a factor that has not gone unnoticed by the local hunting community. As the sun began to rise before dawn on the much-anticipated opening day of hunting season, eager hunters ventured into the woods, driven by a mix of excitement and concern. The reports from the Conservation Department indicated a significant decline in deer numbers compared to previous years, a quiet concern that has only heightened their resolve to participate in the hunt.

Radio Station WHAK has been gearing up to document the season's successes, providing a platform for hunters to share their experiences. The station has invited successful hunters to call in their stories for the daily "Deer Hunters Radio Round-Up," which airs at 11:45 each morning through November 30th. The program is designed to not only celebrate the hunters' achievements but also to keep the community informed with timely weather updates, emergency bulletins, and lively interviews directly from the field.

Meanwhile, at the elegant Casa Loma estate belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Whiteley, the Women's Civic League's "Deer Widows" are engaging in their own form of tradition. As their loved ones immerse themselves in the hunting culture, the women gather to play cards, setting up tables for games of bridge and spitzer. The soft clinking of coffee cups and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee hint at an afternoon filled with laughter, homemade treats, and a sense of feminine camaraderie. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the wilderness where the hunters are braving the elements.
