Morning arrives gently over Rogers City, spreading across rooftops, church steeples, and snow-covered streets that still stubbornly refuse to surrender to spring. Winter lingers at the edge of town, leaving a light dusting of fresh snow and a sharp chill in the breeze off Lake Huron, whose gray waters stretch quietly toward the horizon. Yet inside the homes that line the streets, another season is already taking hold. Easter morning has arrived.

Kitchen lights glow before sunrise as mothers move about preparing breakfast and putting the final touches on the day's feast. The aroma of brewing coffee drifts through warm houses while WHAK hums softly from a nearby radio. Upstairs, children begin to stir, unable to sleep much longer with the promise of Easter baskets waiting somewhere in the house. New dresses hang ready in closets, polished shoes shine by the door, and young boys hear the familiar warning to keep their Sunday clothes clean before church.

Soon there will be chocolate rabbits, jellybeans, brightly colored eggs, and treasured little surprises tucked into baskets. Before the day is over, church bells will ring across town, familiar hymns will fill the sanctuaries, grandparents will arrive for visits, and tables will strain beneath generous helpings of ham, potatoes, vegetables, and homemade desserts. It is one of those days that seems to belong entirely to family, faith, and tradition.

While Easter celebrations filled homes across the community, local businessman and photographer Ferris Parsons was embarking on a new chapter of his own. Parsons had recently relocated his photographic studio to the former Presque Isle County Advance building on Second Street, giving him expanded space to continue the work that had made him one of the area's most respected photographers. From family portraits and wedding photographs to milestone moments preserved for future generations, his camera had captured the faces and stories of Rogers City for years. The larger quarters offered room to grow, ensuring that countless local memories would continue to be recorded and cherished for decades to come.

At Rogers City High School, students were offered a glimpse into a much wider world. Foreign exchange student Suni Erlach-Rybak of Salzburg, Austria, captivated classmates during a school assembly, sharing stories about her homeland's history, geography, government, religion, culture, and everyday life. For an hour, students traveled far beyond northern Michigan without ever leaving their seats, discovering both the differences and similarities that connected teenagers across continents.

The high school was also embracing something entirely new with the introduction of a judo club. Guided by first-year teacher William Barrett, who had learned the sport while studying in Hawaii, students eagerly stepped onto the mat to learn discipline, skill, and confidence through a sport few had ever experienced before.

It had been an especially busy season for local Scouts as well. They first gathered at Lake Paul Lodge for the annual Lions Club Ice Fishing Derby, testing their luck and enjoying one of winter's favorite traditions. The following weekend brought the First Biennial Scout Circus at Alpena High School, where 42 Scout units from across four counties performed before a packed crowd of 2,000 spectators. Families watched demonstrations of first aid, firemaking, signaling, axemanship, and countless other Scout skills before the event concluded with a remarkable campsite scene complete with tents, logs, and glowing artificial campfires. It was both entertainment and education, showcasing the values and abilities that Scouting sought to instill in young people.

And as winter slowly loosened its grip, thoughts increasingly turned toward spring and the return of baseball. Nothing signaled the changing seasons quite like the anticipation of Opening Day. Hope ran high for the Detroit Tigers, powered by stars such as Norm Cash, Rocky Colavito, and Al Kaline. That excitement reached all the way from Tiger Stadium to Rogers City, where fans followed every development with devoted interest.

Among those making the pilgrimage to watch spring training in Lakeland, Florida, were Russell Lamb, Jack Kinville, and Hal Whiteley, eager for an early look at their beloved Tigers. There they posed for photographs alongside Kaline, Hank Aguirre, Paul Foytack, and Charley Maxwell. Yet those ballplayers were more than distant athletic heroes. They were familiar faces in Rogers City, having attended the Little League Banquet the previous fall and spent time hunting at the Norway Pines Hunting Club. The connection between the town and the Tigers had become something special, built not simply on admiration but on friendship.
