Rogers City finds itself enveloped in a thick blanket of cold and snow, as winter reigns supreme over this small community. The temperatures frequently plunge below freezing, creating an icy landscape that the residents have come to know all too well. Despite the biting chill, the townspeople embrace the season, finding solace and joy in a variety of outdoor activities that bring the community together. Children and families can be seen sledding down the snow-covered hills, their laughter echoing through the crisp air as they race each other to the bottom. Others venture out onto the frozen stretches of Lake Huron, where ice fishing has become a cherished pastime. Here, anglers patiently sit by their holes, hoping for a catch while sharing stories and camaraderie.

Adding to the winter festivities, a new ice rink has been established at the baseball field located at the end of Second Street. This particular spot, affectionately referred to by locals as "The Hole," has transformed into a hub of activity. It features a warming shack, a cozy refuge where children can gather to warm their hands and feet after skating. The shack becomes a social hotspot, where friendships blossom and laughter fills the air. This rink will witness countless magical moments, including many first dates, as its enchanting atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for budding romances among local skaters.

In the heart of the community, a local Cub Scout troop has been formed, a significant development that took place during the annual Father and Son Banquet at Westminster Church. While the Boy Scouts have been a part of the community for over two decades, this new program is specifically tailored for younger boys. The Cub Scouts emphasize essential values such as character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness, aiming to instill a sense of responsibility and community involvement in the boys from a young age. Through various activities and learning experiences, the Cub Scouts foster a spirit of teamwork and adventure, paving the way for lifelong skills and friendships.

As February progresses, the town prepares for Valentine's Day, an occasion that brings a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic winter landscape. Local shops are adorned with vibrant red and pink streamers, heart-shaped ornaments, and window displays filled with Valentine's cards and candies. However, this year, the scarcity of treats due to wartime rationing adds a bittersweet note to the festivities. Couples, many of whom are separated by the ongoing war, exchange heartfelt letters filled with longing and affection, their words bridging the distance between them. Some couples seize the opportunity to enjoy a night out at the Rogers Theater, where the excitement of cinema offers a brief escape from the harsh realities of life. Screenings include "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," featuring Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson, alongside a reshowing of the beloved Disney classic "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," providing entertainment that resonates with both young and old alike.

Meanwhile, on the war front, news filters in about the intense and grueling Battle of Iwo Jima. This fierce conflict sees our brave Marines clashing with the Imperial Japanese Army in a struggle for control over the strategically vital island. The primary objective for the Americans is to capture Iwo Jima, which would serve as a forward base for air operations against Japan and support the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. Among the valiant soldiers who fought in this pivotal battle are Gene Heinzel, Wally Dagner, Tom Derry, and Edgar Jones, each of them contributing to the collective effort with courage and determination.

The battle is particularly notorious for its fierce hand-to-hand combat and the extreme challenges posed by the Japanese forces, who had fortified their positions with an extensive network of tunnels, bunkers, and defensive structures. This formidable array of defenses made the task of overcoming them incredibly difficult. In addition to the tactical obstacles, American troops grappled with harsh weather conditions and the rugged terrain, which further complicated their assault and tested their resolve. One of the most enduring symbols of this harrowing battle is the iconic photograph capturing U.S. Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. This powerful image has come to represent not only the determination and bravery of the soldiers but also the indomitable spirit of the American people during a time of great adversity.
